Contrast between Tess of the d’Urbervilles and Jude the Obscure: the Center Changes from Circumstance to Character

Abstract: By contrast between Tess of the d’Urbervilles and Jude the Obscure, this essay shows the writing center changes from circumstance to character. Discuss in the following three aspects: Circumstance plays a less important role in novel; Character decides the direction of plot; and Character decides the organization of the story, through analysis of the relations between circumstance, character and plot, the impairment of circumstance effect and character getting the crucial position.

“人”的站立—《苔絲》與《裘德》比較：從環(huán)境決定論到人物中心

摘要：托馬斯•哈代作為英國(guó)維多利亞時(shí)期著名的小說(shuō)家和詩(shī)人，在兩方面都取得很高的成就。在其取得小說(shuō)主要成就的“性格與環(huán)境小說(shuō)”中，《德伯家的苔絲》與《無(wú)名的裘德》是最為成功的兩部。本文通過(guò)《苔絲》與《裘德》比較，指出寫(xiě)作的中心完成了由環(huán)境到人物的轉(zhuǎn)移。通過(guò)分析環(huán)境與人物同情節(jié)結(jié)構(gòu)的關(guān)系、環(huán)境作用的削弱和人物取得決定性地位，從環(huán)境到人物的中心轉(zhuǎn)移、人物決定情節(jié)方向、人物決定結(jié)構(gòu)特色三個(gè)方面展開(kāi)論述。
