New Discovery in the Antarctic
The list of sea and land animals around the Antarctic has grown to 1, 224 species according to scientists’ new research.
A team from the British Antarctic Survey and the University of Hamburg spent seven weeks’ studying life on the Antarctic Peninsula(半島).
Scientists recorded marine and land species, including sea urchins(海膽), free-swimming worms and birds. They also examined over 100 years of historical records about the species that live in this area. Five species were found to be completely new to science.
The scientists believed that the study provides an important standard to monitor how animals respond to the climate change.
The temperature of the ocean around the Antarctic has increased by about 1°C in the last fifty years. The temperature on the Antarctic Peninsula has increased by 2. 5°C over the same period. The Antarctic is one of the most rapidly warming parts of the earth.
A scientist said, “We were surprised to find so many animals on these islands. Using this survey we can monitor how they will respond to the climate change. ”It is believed that the number of different species is very great in the tropics(熱帶) and decreases throughout the temperate(溫帶的) areas. At the polar areas, there is almost no life. According to a scientist, we don’t find species because we only look for life on the land. When we see the Arctic and the Antarctic, we just see ice. But below the surface of the sea, there is a rich environment.
Another scientist said, “We never knew there were so many different species on and around these islands. They prove that the Antarctic is not short of biodiversity(生物多樣性). ”
