Common Difficulties in College English Learning and Corresponding Suggestions
Abstract
Based on some current theories in language teaching, language learning, and language, this article, with the intention of helping college English learners to overcome some of their common difficulties, suggests some methods for English teaching, respectively for English reading, listening, speaking and writing.
Difficulties in reading and corresponding suggestions
Reading is the way for foreign language learners, who have not enough opportunities to get contact with foreign language, to get most information from foreign language material and practise foreign language. Reading comprehension always occupies an important position in English teaching in China. Most difficulties encountered by college students in reading can be classified into three sorts. The first sort is that the learners can not grasp the meaning of reading material even though they know the meaning of every word in this material and have no doubt about the grammatical structures. The second is that the learnt meanings of some words seem inappropriate in the present text. The last one turns out to be that reading is hard to continued in case of meeting several new words. All the above phenomena reveal that some students reading comprehension remains in the level of words and sentences instead of discourse and the concept of discourse has not been well established.
