As an indispensable and natural part of English language, euphemism has been arousing wide interests. Many linguists and scholars have studied the linguistic phenomenon from different angles. Based on their achievements, the paper examines the pragmatic principles that guide the use of euphemisms. Scholars have considered the Co-operative Principle (CP) and the Politeness Principle (PP), the two principles are the basic guiding principles in the application of euphemisms. To some degree, to meet a certain need, people often disobey some maxims of the Co-operative Principle in order to show politeness. 作為英語不可分割的一部分，英語委婉語是英語國家的人們在進(jìn)行交際時，為了排除各種因素的干擾、保障交際的順暢進(jìn)行，從而通過在語言符號的所指與能指之間造成疏離來代替、掩飾、衰減婉語的禁忌、直接和粗鄙的一種婉轉(zhuǎn)、間接的策略性表達(dá)方式。古今中外許多學(xué)者都對英語委婉語進(jìn)行了多方面、多角度的研究?；谇叭说难芯砍晒疚膶⑻接懹⒄Z委婉語與言語交際中語用學(xué)原則的關(guān)系。本文對中外學(xué)者提出的眾多指導(dǎo)英語委婉語使用的語用學(xué)原則一一分析，并認(rèn)為由格賴斯提出的合作原則和里奇提出的禮貌原則是使用英語委婉語的兩條基本原則；而其他所謂原則或者不屬于語用范疇，或者是合作原則與禮貌原則在某種程度上的衍生。一般的，人們在交際中必須遵守格賴斯的合作原則的四個次則。然而，在現(xiàn)實交際中，大多數(shù)英語委婉語的使用往往違背了這四個次則中的任意一個，以遵守禮貌原則。本文將以大量的實例來分析這一現(xiàn)象，并論述英語委婉語功能的發(fā)生過程。文章還深入探討了英語委婉語的定義，起源及其發(fā)展變化規(guī)律。隨著社會的高速發(fā)展，許多英語委婉語如曇花一現(xiàn)，稍縱即逝。所以英語學(xué)習(xí)者要透過現(xiàn)象看本質(zhì)，深入研究指導(dǎo)英語委婉語使用的語用學(xué)原則，才能對其本質(zhì)有正確、深入的認(rèn)識，為進(jìn)行成功的跨文化交流打下良好的基礎(chǔ)。
