Abstract
Euphemism is the substitution of a mild, indirect, or vague expression for one thought to be offensive, harsh, or blunt. The word “Euphemism” is borrowed from Greece, the literal meaning of "Euphemism" is a word of good omen. Euphemism, as a special sociolinguistic as well as a linguistic phenomenon in the English language, is closely connected with the cultures of English-speaking countries, especially the most influential two—British culture and American culture. Therefore, learning euphemisms is not only learning the language items but also learning the cultures of Britain and America. Oh the whole, there is a need for us to use euphemism to replace the existence of taboos and unpleasant, negative notions.
The paper is developed into five parts. The first part is a brief introduction, stating the thesis of my article. Euphemism research can be broadened into a wider range. The second part classifies English euphemisms into traditional euphemisms and stylistic euphemisms according to whether they are connected with taboo items or not. The third part focuses on the means of forming euphemism. The fourth part analyses the variations of euphemisms within the scope of British English and American English. The fifth part that is a co
